When Promoting Yourself Feels Gross
As a kid in the classroom, I was deathly afraid of being seen, even though part of me desperately wanted to be.
My fear wasn’t that I had nothing to say. It was that I wouldn’t say the right thing. But when I did have the right answer or something thoughtful to add, my adrenaline would kick in, and I would quietly will the teacher to call on me through psychotic eye contact.
I was never going to be audacious enough to raise my hand and offer it up unprompted. I needed someone to call on me first.
A lot of us carry that same pattern into our businesses, our work, our creative lives, and our marketing.
You can feel deeply confident in what you do, and still feel uncomfortable promoting it without someone asking first… waiting for permission to talk about it or for someone to say, “Tell me more!”
That’s where selling starts to feel icky for a lot of deeply feeling people, who are acutely aware of and sensitive to other people's reactions.
Not because we don’t believe in the work, but because visibility without invitation can feel unsafe.
Promotion can feel like raising your hand in a room where nobody called on you.
In this episode of The Energy Xchange, I’m getting into why selling can feel so gross for sensitive, thoughtful, service-oriented people, and how to reframe promotion so it feels less like pressure and more like clarity.
We're exploring:
Why self-promotion can feel so gross for sensitive, thoughtful people
The difference between contribution and invitation
Why trust isn't the finish line, it's the foundation
How over-giving, people-pleasing, and imposter syndrome can make selling feel emotional
Why your free content may be building trust, but not creating a clear path to work with you
How selling can become a simple, grounded invitation instead of a dramatic sales pitch
The difference between performance and leadership
And the question every creator and business owner should ask: “If someone loved everything I put out for the next six months, would they actually know how to work with me?”
The Energy Xchange is a podcast for highly sensitive people (HSPs), empaths, INFJs, and deep feelers navigating relationships, business, and personal growth.
