What You're Consuming Is Consuming You
A few years ago, I spent Thanksgiving by myself. I had dinner plans later in the day — I was meeting my friend Nicole — but for most of the day, it was just me.
With a backdrop of Kenny G holiday music in the background, I spent the whole day feeling… sad. What am I doing? I'm so alone. Do I need to change my life? Do I need to move somewhere? What am I doing?
And then at some point, I changed the music.
And I felt great. Nothing about my circumstances changed.
The only thing that changed was the sound in the room.
In this episode, I'm unpacking something I think about all the time: that we're always in conversation with something, even when we're alone, and that what we let in is quietly building the emotional climate we live in every single day. For deeply feeling people especially, we absorb more than we realize, and before long, other voices can get louder than our own.
This is about becoming intentional with your inputs - the accounts, podcasts, newsletters, background noise, and even the people - so the loudest voice in your life can finally be yours again.
