How to Use AI Without Losing Your Voice

Almost every personal branding client I'm working with right now is asking me some version of the same question: Is using AI in my marketing okay? Is it cheating? Is it kind of gross?

People assume that because I'm a writer and content strategist, I'm going to tell them to stay away from ChatGPT. But the truth is, I love AI and use it constantly (to organize my thinking, repurpose my content, and get my work into the world faster, etc.)

The question isn't "Should I use AI?" The better question is: who's providing the thought leadership?

AI isn't what's making people sound generic. People sound generic when they ask AI to do their thinking for them. There's a world of difference between "here's what I believe, here's my rough draft, help me organize it" and "write me ten captions about nutrition." One is collaboration. The other hands over what no tool can replace: your knowledge, experience, and voice.

And your voice lives in smaller places than you'd think. It's your rhythm, your cadence, the contractions you use, the phrases you reach for without realizing it. When people know you, they notice the moment those things disappear.

We're not competing on information anymore; there's more of that than any of us could consume in a lifetime. We're competing on perspective, personality, and humanity. And the easier information gets to generate, the more valuable those things become.
