The Structure That Gives You More Freedom
Maybe you're not bad at routines. Maybe you're not undisciplined, or too creative for structure. Maybe you've just been trying to build your life inside a system that was never designed for you.
For decades, I was convinced I hated structure. That I was bad at routines, not disciplined enough, just too creative for any of it. Turns out none of that was true. I don't hate structure; I just can't thrive inside structures that are too rigid or too disconnected from how I'm actually wired.
If you're a deeply feeling, deeply thinking person, you probably need the why before you'll commit to the how. "Because I said so" was never going to work on you — not as a kid, and not now. So when a rigid system demands compliance for its own sake, you push back. That doesn't make you undisciplined. It might just mean you've spent a lot of time inside structures that were never built for you.
Here's the reframe that changed everything for me: structure isn't the opposite of freedom. Good structure protects it. A budget creates financial freedom. Boundaries create emotional freedom. The goal was never to become more disciplined; it was to find the smallest amount of structure that gives me both the results and the freedom I actually want.
I call it the minimum effective structure. Because the routine we design from our most inspired, hyped-up self usually isn't the one our everyday self can actually keep once the dopamine wears off. Three workouts instead of six. One weekly planning session instead of a color-coded hour-by-hour calendar. A morning anchor instead of a minute-by-minute routine. Small enough to sustain, but meaningful enough to produce real wins. Those wins are what change your whole relationship to structure!
What this episode dives into:
Why you might not hate structure — just the rigid, "because I said so" kind
The pendulum swing from oppressive structure to zero structure (and why neither worked)
Why good structure protects your freedom instead of stealing it
The "minimum effective structure" — and how to find yours
Why the routine your inspired self designs isn't the one your everyday self can keep
How small early wins build momentum from proof, not pressure
Why forcing yourself into someone else's system so often backfires
Wanting the result vs. wanting the lifestyle required to maintain it
